Special Education Millage Renewal - No Millage Increase
This is a renewal of a special education millage that was originally approved by the voters who live within the MOISD service region in May 2007. It was renewed again in November 2015. Originally 1 full mill, it has been reduced by the Headlee Amendment to .9850 mills. This is not a millage increase but a continuation of a tax voters have been paying since 2007.

Cost To Homeowner
For a person who owns a home with a taxable value of $100,000, the millage represents a tax of about $98.50 per year or $8.20 per month or 27 cents per day.
If The Millage Renewal Is Approved
The money generated by this millage can only be spent on special education services provided to students with an IEP (Individualized Education Plan). Of the funds generated by the millage, 85% is used by the local school districts for costs that exceed the special education reimbursement they receive from the state. The other 15% is used by MOISD for special education transportation of local district students who attend the Education Center in Big Rapids and other satellite special education programs.
If The Millage Renewal Is Not Approved
Without these funds, local districts would need to cover all unreimbursed special education expenditures from their general fund and MOISD would need to cover all unreimbursed special education transportation expenditures from its special education fund.
